Here’s some exciting news…….
Since I posted my article “When all else fails…there’s Plan B”, a new generic for Plan B called Levonorgestrel has been approved by the FDA. Levonorgestrel is the first approved generic for Plan B.
I love it when new generics come out!!!
The Levonorgestrel generic will soon be available by prescription only and is approved for girls ages 17 and younger – a lady 18 years or older can get a prescription for the new generic, but it would be considered an “off-label” use.
NOTE: “Off-label” use occurs when a doctor prescribes a medication to a patient for a purpose that is different from what the FDA has approved the drug for – the doctor uses their knowledge and best judgment in these cases.
Even though the brand name Plan B is available over-the-counter to women aged 18 and older, the new generic cannot immediately become OTC. This is because the company that makes the brand name Plan B has legal rights (a patent) where the generic cannot be sold OTC until those rights expire (that happens in August 2009). Once those legal rights expire, the company making the generic will have to get approval from the FDA before they can sell it OTC.
I’m not sure when the medication will be ready for dispensing from the pharmacy, but I will keep you posted on this matter for sure.
