Whine-up, it’s Labor Day weekend and time to Parrrrrrty!
Nova and I hit up this event called The Gallery Crawl in the NoDa district of Charlotte (the artsy part of town) last night. It was pretty cool…lots of vendors selling crafty stuff, especially art. At least that’s what appeared to be what was going down…we didn’t make it much past the bars (we discovered bubble gum flavored vodka – sounds worse than it really is)!
It’s all good, the event takes place every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month so we have plenty of chances to get it right!
We got another great question from a reader, and it goes like this:
Hello,
I took Plan B Sunday after my husband and I had too much fun Saturday night.(I took it maybe 17 hours later.) We are not ready to have another baby. We would be in a serious financial bind. I have read contradicting information on the web. Some sites say it will prevent implantation but other sites say it only delays ovulation. This concerns me because it just so happens it was exactly the 15th day after the first day of my period! So I am not sure if I ovulated and it was pointless to take Plan B. =/
Any information you can give me will be GREATLY appreciated.
Thank you.
The answer is (more like my e-mail back to her was!)….
Thanks for getting in touch with me about your concern. I’m always extra excited when people contact Nova and I with questions!
Getting straight to the point, I can see why you would be concerned, especially with the conflicting information you have found in regards to how Plan B works. The good news is researchers are quite confident that Plan B works in several ways to prevent pregnancy.
Plan B’s primary action is to prevent or delay the release of the egg from the ovaries (possibly too late in your case, but there’s the chance that ovulation hadn’t occurred yet!). However, evidence shows that Plan B may also disrupt the actual processes of fertilization, embryo transport, or implantation into the uterus.
With all of these secondary mechanisms in play, I have a very good feeling (though can’t guarantee) you’ll be in “no baby on board” status and come up being NOT pregnant.
You also helped your situation by taking Plan B 17 hours after fun time with the hubby ended! This is because Plan B is most effective if taken within 24 hours of having intercourse. If taken as directed within 72 hours of having intercourse, about 7 out of every 8 women who would have gotten pregnant end up avoiding pregnancy altogether. These odds get even better the sooner you take the morning-after-pill (i.e. within 24 hours of sex, as in your case)!
So with all that being said, I think you’re in the clear. I hope this answer helps you out at least a little bit!
Let me know how things turn out and thanks again for contacting me!

What if I took Plan B ONE day before my ovulation date – but then I ovulate after that because Plan B delays ovulation. How long does Plan B delays ovulation for? and how effective is it days after taken?
thanks
Hey, thanks for posting your questions! I wrote a quick article in response to your comment, so be sure to check it out. It should pop-up near the top of the blog page, but if it doesn’t, I put it under the “women’s health” category. Have a great day and come back soon!
what if i took the next choice pill about 27 hours after intercourse? would my odds still be as good as if i took it at exactly 24 hours?
Hi Jennifer, thank you for leaving a comment! Next Choice works best within 72 hours after intercourse. It has been proven to be more effective the closer you take it to intercourse. So, 4 hours is better then 10 hours which is better then 24 hours which is better then 27 hours. So, it is better to take it at 24 hours versus 27 hours, however the difference of 3 hours wouldn’t be a huge deal. I hope this clears it up a little!
Take care,
Nova
